Prison Deaths and the Inquest Process

If a person dies suddenly whilst in prison, it is likely that there will be an inquest to look at the circumstances.

Prison Death Inquest Solicitors

The Prisons and Probations Ombudsman has confirmed six sudden deaths at HMP Parc in Bridgend from the 27th of February – 19th of March 2024, with at least four being linked to the drug Spice.

Spice is a synthetic cannabinoid and was originally designed to mimic the effects of cannabis, however Spice is often hundreds of times as potent and toxic than cannabis. Though cannabis comes with its own serious risks, spice is typically much more unpredictable in its effects. The Ombudsman has urged ‘all prisoners who are in possession of spice to dispose of it immediately. This is a dangerous drug and we do not want to see any more unnecessary deaths occur’.

Following the sudden deaths, it is likely that the Coroner will look to open an inquest for each individual.

What is an Inquest?

An inquest is an investigation into the death which appears to be due to unknown, violent or unnatural causes. The Coroner will seek to establish who the deceased was, and where, when and how (meaning by what means) that they came by their death.  Where an individual has died whilst in custody, or state detention, the scope of the Inquest is widened to include the broader circumstances leading to the death.
