Emma Sweeney

Emma is an Assistant Solicitor and has been part of the Children Law team at Harding Evans since August 2020. She studied Law with German at Cardiff University and Trier University in Germany and qualified as a solicitor in 2015.

Emma specialises in children matters and has extensive experience in public law care proceedings involving social services. She regularly acts for parents in complex cases where there are concerns of serious non-accidental injury, fabricated induced illness, neglect, domestic abuse, sexual and emotional harm and parental drug and alcohol misuse.

With considerable experience of acting for parties with learning difficulties and mental health problems, Emma has also acted for clients who lack litigation capacity (as protected parties under the Mental Capacity Act 2005) via the Official Solicitor.

She has represented parents in care proceedings with an international element and jurisdictional disputes, and has also acted for asylum seekers with concurrent immigration proceedings. She is used to representing parents where culturally sensitive concerns are prevalent, having dealt with numerous cases involving Female Genital Mutilation and forced marriage.

In childcare matters involving Social Services, Emma is able to help with securing contact with a child in care, discharging a Care Order, revoking a Placement Order or opposing an Adoption Order.

In private family matters, she is also able to help with child arrangements (deciding with whom a child is to live or spend time) and special guardianship.

Emma recently received this lovely feedback from a client who she had helped:

“I just wanted to say a huge thank you for all your help and support with everything. It has been the most stressful thing I’ve ever been through but knowing your friendly and calm voice were at the end of the phone was a huge relief. I couldn’t have wished for a better Solicitor to guide me through the somewhat frustrating process, and your patience and compassion has been invaluable.”
