Kate Thomas comments on ‘Divorce rates increase for the first time this decade as over-50s untie the knot’

This week the telegraph published an article stating that divorce rates in England and Wales have increased for the first time this decade according to the Office for National Statistics. Kate Thomas, a Partner in our Family department comments:

“It has certainly become apparent over recent years that there is a clear trend where the age of Clients seeking  divorce is increasing.

I consider this could be due to economic recovery, with far less fear surrounding the distribution of assets in terms of their value and liquidity.  We are also, perhaps, a far more tolerant and accepting society and this in turn has created a feeling of independence, confidence and opportunity.

I also take the view that as a society, over the last ten years, we have had to rapidly adjust to change, economically, politically, socially and culturally.  Perhaps this has removed the fear of taking life-changing steps and not simply remaining where we are.

In addition we are living longer and retiring later.  Perhaps 50 has become the new 40”
