‘Meet the Head of Department’: Featuring Milena Roberts, our newly appointed Head of HR and Facilities

One of our newest members to our team is Milena Roberts, our brilliant Head of HR and Facilities. Milena discusses a range of topics including her passion for pursuing a career in HR, as well as providing an insight in relation to her role at Harding Evans.

Q1 – Tell us a bit about yourself

I graduated with a degree in Human Resources Management (Level 7 CIPD) six years ago while working full time as part of an HR team for a high end automotive company. Within my career I have supported businesses in a variety of fields from business operations, change management, training and of course HR. These opportunities helped me to develop my skills and understanding of business strategies. People management and development excites me. It can be very rewarding and at the same time challenging. On a personal note, I am an open-minded, outgoing and supportive individual.

Q2 – What first interested you in a career in HR?

In recent years the HR industry has undergone a significant transformation. From being ‘just a bit more than an administrative function’ in the business to playing a key role in developing, reinforcing the culture of an organisation. The HR role gives me the opportunity to influence innumerable aspects of an organisation, to assist in the development of its employees, and to play a part in influencing strategic business decisions. A business is only as good as its employees, and an organisation’s employees are only as good as their HR team.

Q3 – Describe a typical day in the life of a HR professional

Every HR professional knows there’s no such thing as a ‘typical’ day at work. I see the role of HR within a business as a support function for the employees and management, to enable business progression and achieve strategic targets, which is why I love my role!

Q4 – What is the most satisfying aspect of your job?

I love that I get to work with a wide range of people who are passionate about the organisation I am working for. Being able to deliver people strategies that make a difference is so rewarding.

Q5 – What inspires you on a daily basis?

Success is what motivates me to do a good job, as I am very target driven. Helping others and empowering people is what inspires me the most, including team work and personal development.

Q6 – What are your goals for 2020?

Human Resource Management is one such business activity that keeps exploring the need for new changes and innovations. An HR professional has to keep themselves informed of the new technologies, strategic management techniques, applications and more. My strategic priorities in 2020 are all about employees and business support i.e. Employee Wellbeing, Talent Management, Engagement and Good Leadership.

Q7 – A tip for a career-minded individual starting out in their HR career…

Really get to know your organisation and don’t be afraid to broaden your HR knowledge by taking the opportunity to work in different areas of HR.
