Testicular Torsion

Testicular torsion is a painful and serious condition that occurs when the vessel supplying the testicles with blood (the spermatic cord) gets twisted. It is the most common in teenage boys, between 13 and 17 years old and is rare in men over 30, but it can happen at any time. There is no real reason why it occurs, but it can happen after an injury to the testicles and boys who have had an undescended testicle as a small child are more at risk.

Left untreated, the blood flow to the testicle can be affected and sometimes the testicle will be so damaged that it needs to be removed. This will obviously have a longstanding impact for the patient, physically, and sometimes psychologically too.Testicular torsion needs speedy treatment, usually with surgery.
